kecky:

For Tutorial Tuesday, kkkkkyrie requested an arm tutorial, so I threw this hot mess together. I’m not sure if it’s too much or too little information, and the drawings are pretty terrible, but hopefully it points out some little things that might be helpful the next time you are drawing a figure!

She also asked about coming up with new poses instead of using the same ones over and over, and in answer to that, I highly recommend drawing a bunch of tiny thumbnail sketches before you start work on a full-size drawing! You’ll find that there is usually much more life in your tiny scribbles than if you just start out trying to draw big, because there’s less room to get hung up on details before you get the movement of the pose down, and if something doesn’t look right after 5 minutes, it’s no big deal to just try another one.

Different Male Bodies.

memes that are more useful than actual class

hospitalvespers:

here is a list of deviantart memes that are more helpful than our character design teacher could ever hope to be. i wouldn’t say you have to do all of them, or even every thing in each one (switch stuff up a bit if it inspires you to draw a different pose), but they’re all good starting places!

Expressions and Body Language
25 Essential Character Expressions - super helpful for different emotions you might not normally draw
Ultimate Expressions - same thing but bigger if you have like a YEAR
Reactions - expressions, but with a reason!
Body Language - body language is just as important as facial expression, so this is a good one to try

Poses
Annoying Poses - some tricky things
Action Poses - HIGH KICKS ALL AROUND
Action Poses II - (for more subdued characters)
Character Poses - various, everyday things

Development
Different Ages - it’d probably be better to space out the ages more, but it’s a good start
Character Variety - figure out what makes them unique
Wardrobe - drawing clothes is FUN
updated age meme

Other Stuff
Character Building - more of a written thing, but interesting if you’re into that kind of stuff

A Fun Tool for Practicing Character Design

ruddyowls:

I have discovered that Seventh Sanctum’s general character generator is a good tool for people who, like me, are just beginning to try and design a wide variety of characters of different appearances and body types! Click generate and it gives you a random character description, which you can then attempt to draw as you see fit, such as these:

This woman reminds you of a placid lake. She has wide blue eyes. Her fine, straight, chocolate-colored hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a pile of leaves. She is short and has a lithe build. Her skin is cream-colored. She has a high forehead. Her wardrobe is no-nonsense, and is completely green and gray.”

“This woman reminds you of a vicious barracuda. She has narrow blue eyes. Her luxurious, curly, neck-length hair is the color of desert sand, and is worn in a weird style. She has an elegant build. Her skin is pale. She has knobby ears and large hands. Her wardrobe is impractical, with a lot of orange.”

“This gentleman reminds you of a prowling panther. He has almond-shaped purple eyes that are like two amethysts. His silky, wavy, short hair is the color of obsidian, and is worn in an impractical style. He has an angular build. His skin is china-white. He has bushy eyebrows. His wardrobe is artistic.”

You can obviously see that some of the descriptors are a little bit absurd and purple prosey, and some of them don’t even make sense, but that’s the fun part - you, as the artist, get to decide how these silly descriptors would translate into an actual person’s appearance. For instance, I think I got one chick who had “large eyes that look like spots of dried blood,” which was kind of a dumb description, but then I decided, hey, maybe she wears a lot of gaudy red makeup around her eyes, and that became a part of her appearance that told a little piece of her personality.

So there you go! Hope this helps some people.

USING ARCHETYPES IN YOUR STORIES

Writing Better Romantic Relationships

This series looks at the Anima/Animus archetype, which is most often seen in romantic relationships, and how to use it to create more compelling romantic relationships, regardless of genre. Looks at what the anima and animus are, how they’re formed, and why fiction writers need to understand them. There’s also some and what makes love grow - and how happily ever afters really work.

ArtsyPoses - Relatively new, but very cool. The 30 second drawing tool seems to be glitching a little but that could be my computer being a dumb. Lots of unique poses and they’re looking to expand to other body types (if you read the FAQ they even said there are too many fit models).

PoseManiacs - Everybody knows this one! Great poses, you can interact with them (rotation, etc) and has a very cool 30 second drawing tool. Also I belieeeve this is available on iOS.

Pixelovey - Another fantastic drawing tool - I prefer it over PoseManiacs’ but I can NEVER FIND THE LINK :( Lots of options here, too.

CedarSeed - The drawings here aren’t great but there is so much information here.

Color Is Value - Handy coloring tips and things!

Ctrl+Paint - So many digital painting tutorials. SO MANY. Ridiculously helpful in everything ever, and constantly updated.

The Angry Animator - Because come on, all sorts of handy animation tips. I linked directly to the walk cycle because I found it to be most useful but there are other things floatin’ around there if that’s your thing~

Constructing the Head/Face - Done by Stanislav Prokopenko, an instructor. Also really seems to know what he’s talking about. Saving images off of Tumblr seems to be hit-or-miss so keep this link handy as it may not save correctly.

Drawing Muscles - Some of you may remember this from all of James Phegan’s classes ever! Super handy, and this is a printable version of the giant jpg he used to e-mail us.

Drawing more Muscles - The same artist; she’s really damn good at drawing beefy dudes.
